“Today’s musical comedy stars replace the Grecian bend of The Florodora Girls with abandon, and little else” reads the headline. It mentioned the famous gals who have come from the anonymity of chorus lines, including: Eva Tanguay, Ann Held, Bebe Daniels, Ruby Keeler, Barbara Stanwyck, and Lucille Ball.
Here are the final pages of the July 1913 issue of The Modern Priscilla. It wraps up and concludes the fashion and cooking articles, as well as shorter articles, including the Priscilla Juniors section and article about Summer Food for Children. These last pages are also chock full of ads for interesting things
Here are some advertisements for Cream of Wheat, and Mennen’s Toilet Powder baby powder from 1913, as well as the table of contents and cover of The Modern Priscilla July 1913 issue. The Modern Priscilla was a housekeeping and fashion magazine.
Here are some more scans from The Modern Priscilla, July 1917. I really love the late Edwardian fashions of this transitional fashion era between corsets and the flapper girl of the 1920s. Note the article “Learning to Cook with Marrion Harris Neal” Ices and Desserts, it talks about ice molds made of lead, and that [...]
Here is some 1917 advice and articles from the Modern Priscilla on adding lace to women’s clothing, decorating hats with embroidery, and an article or advertisement about Summer Blouses of Viole fabric. I scanned these several times to capture both the vintage ads as well as the articles from this magazine. I especially enjoyed the [...]
I scanned thru the needle work section of the April 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla, which had patterns and advice on making doilies, tatted edges on linens, crochet patterns, small hand sewn gifts for the bride, and other needlework ideas. I’ve scanned several of these twice, because my scanner bed wasn’t big enough to [...]
Apparently this ladies’ home and house keeping magazine’s issue was just published right before the United States entered World War I in April of 1917. The theme of this month’s issue of The Modern Priscilla was “Weddings”. I’m loving the old fashion advertisements in this end-of-the-Edwardian period women’s magazine, and also the embroidery and crochet lace patterns [...]
The picture that grips me most from this set is the turn of the century photo of the little blonde toddler next to a chair taken by Hans Jaggli from Winterthur Sweden. The back is stamped with: H. Jaggli Atlier fur photographie Winterthur 2 Ecke Wart-und Rudiofstrasse Telephon No 220 Platten bleiben aufbewahrd Vergrosserungen nach [...]
J. Haas shot a very lovely looking portrait of a young couple, which I am guessing (but not sure) would be around 1908-ish because of her high necked long tulip flared gown and poofed sleeves. Please correct me in the comments if I’m wrong! I am finding the backs of these old photos more informative [...]
