Here are some housekeeping tips from 1917, as well as filet crochet patterns…. and alot of old advertisements!

There are also even more recipes, an article on the nutritional value of eggs, and “Tested Household Devices” (featuring a vacuum insulated beverage container, and antiseptic nut cracker).

Home Making a Business, and other pages from the July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla

February 23, 2012 by Kay

I think that the turn of the century business advice for women was just fascinating. It’s “The story of a woman’s success in adapting the materials at hand and developing from them a pleasant and profitable occupation….” . The middle section is about how to stop food waste, which in 1917 was estimated at $700,000 annually.

Paired with that article on how to make a profitable business as a lady, was a full page sugar advertisement for Domino sugar refinery.

The latest in interior design, including sample wallpaper patterns and the importance of selecting a good wall covering.

Finally, a story about how a resourceful young woman solved the issue of midsummer cooking and home decor, all while keeping cool and stress free.

1917 fashions, advertisements, and articles from The Modern Priscilla – July 1917 issue

February 6, 2012 by Kay

Here are some more scans from The Modern Priscilla, July 1917. I really love the late Edwardian fashions of this transitional fashion era between corsets and the flapper girl of the 1920s.

Note the article “Learning to Cook with Marrion Harris Neal” Ices and Desserts, it talks about ice molds made of lead, and that you should offer macaroons at the same time as the icecream, “an item that should not be overlooked by a woman who has no maid”.

The fashions featured in this slim issue were “Smart Dresses of Washable Fabrics” and “Sport Clothes for the Summer Girl”.

Here are some knitted garments to make for Army and Navy soldiers in World War 1, sponsored by the American Red Cross. Patterns for knitting 3 models of helmets, socks, sleeveless sweaters, heelless hospital socks, and thumbless mitten wristers. Again, from the July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla ladies home making and needle craft magazine.

July 1917 – World War I issue of The Modern Priscilla Housekeeping Magazine

January 24, 2012 by Kay

This issue included instructions for knitting items for the Red Cross and soldiers sent off to World War 1. I’ve scanned the illustrated front cover, the back cover which was an advertisement for Old Dutch Cleanser, and the Cream of Wheat ad in this July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla.

Summer 1917 Hair Styles – and the last of the April 1917 scans

January 23, 2012 by Kay

This “batch” of scans included information and advice on correct corset adjustment, the many uses of peanuts, advice on mothering, and more patterns and ads! I especially liked the ad for garters for children – and all the corset ads!

Below is the end of the April 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla that I scanned:

Edwardian Cooking and Kitchen Advertisements, Advice, and “How to”s from 1917

January 22, 2012 by Kay

Here are some misc scans – it appears to be the cooking and kitchen section of the April 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla… being a terrible cook and uninterested in cooking, I didn’t bother to read any of these articles, and barely looked at the vintage ads for Quaker Oats, Boss Ovens, and Cocoa. It looks like this includes an article on how to restore old furniture, how to select household silverware, planning meals for a family, and how to set the Edwardian bride’s luncheon table.

Late Edwardian Fashion Illustrations, Style Advice, and Advertisements

January 21, 2012 by Kay

These few pages of Edwardian fashion drawings were most fascinating! The Modern Priscilla advised on summer styles for the 1917 bride, house dresses and negligee, Summer styles for children, and spring coats for grown ups. I’ve scanned a few pages twice to make sure that I also got the ads along the sides of the main fashion advice articles that advertise the latest fashion patterns.
