Turn of the century wedding, couples, and portraiture

I found these old turn of the century wedding photos especially fascinating, especially the girl in the black wedding dress that looks quite corseted. I wish I knew more about turn of the century fashions, because I am guessing that the black would be from the 1890s and the white dresses from more about 1910s? Not sure, feel free to comment if you know.

This is my last set of old photo scans for 2011! Now I’m finally finished with posting them. Hopefully I can scan more of these turn of the century photos in 2012, because it’s fun to look at other people’s old family photos… but if not, I still have a ton of old slides to scan when I’m needing a mental break from webdesign and whatnot.

1890s Childrens Portraits

This is my second to last batch of turn of the century photo scans, and I’ve divided them roughly into “children” and “adults”. One of the little girls’ photos had a small picture fall out from the backing of the cardboard when I picked it up to scan, and I’ve included a scan of it also.

Turn of the century Children’s photos – from 1906

I found a date on these turn of the century children’s and family photos I scanned. On the back of the photo of the young woman in a white dress by St. Louis photographer J. Hass, was written “1906″ (which I also scanned). I’m guessing that the other photos in this group were also from the same period of the early 1900s.

I am guessing the woman in black with a veil is in her wedding dress – if so, it’s funny how bridal fashions have changed!

Family photos from 1913 and the early part of the 1900s

Here are a few of my latest scans. The family photo in the white frame was dated 1913 on the back. The last one is clearly a class photo that some small child or angsty teen has drawn thru and torn up a bit – is it from the first decade of the 20th century? I am not sure of the dates on the others. Some of these are a little warped and bent from moisture and age.

The picture that grips me most from this set is the turn of the century photo of the little blonde toddler next to a chair taken by Hans Jaggli from Winterthur Sweden.

1920s old car and family photos

This old family photo with the art deco border stamped August 20, 1927 on the back, is one of my favorite pictures so far. I wish I knew the story behind it, but I can imagine on the expressions of the people around this old Model T.

The old woman looks absolutely worried and nervous. I bet she’s saying “you don’t have to have the neighbors take a picture, I’ll remember this well enough”. Her daughter (?) is staring directly into the camera and looks the happiest of anyone in this photo.

My second favorite photo from this batch is of the 4 people in front of the 1920s car. The older woman is in a white dress and wearing a short brimmed hat, and the woman to her right is wearing a cloche hat with pearls. The young boy staring into the camera just grips me.

Old Family Photos from 1880s to 1942

The young in the black dress looks very uncomfortable, as if her corset has been laced too tight.

The young man staring directly into the camera, perfectly exposed and focused, is my favorite of this set.

Then, there’s a child on a play horse, and a photo of young people on a bridge that is dated 1942, and a man in front of a house that is dated June 5 1927.

Family Photos (mostly) from the 1880s

These pictures were inserted into archival plastic sleeves with no apparent order!

There is a very pretty young girl, and on the back it’s dated “Christmas 1885″. Another, from 1889 by Hagendorff of Milwaukee Wisconsin… is this one of the same girl? I like the one of the older woman with glasses in a black lace high necked Victorian looking dress. Older people have more character, but young folks of this era look so innocent!

I like the white frame details around the boy in the white shirt. It was not dated.

The photo of the young boy and girl in black is dated 1882 and was taken by Schroeder’s Studio, 359 Third St., Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Very formal turn of the century wedding photo, and a random one or 2 from 1914

J. Haas shot a very lovely looking portrait of a young couple, which I am guessing (but not sure) would be around 1908-ish because of her high necked long tulip flared gown and poofed sleeves. Please correct me in the comments if I’m wrong!

I am finding the backs of these old photos more informative and interesting than the people in them, mostly! The back of the formally posed young man by W. Wollensak of Milwaukee Wisconsin has two dates on it, and I would believe the 1885 date (not the 1948!).

I love the detailed art-deco frame of the baby photo that is dated 1914 on the back.

The other photo was taken by Kets Kennethy out of Washington DC…

… and … finally… a man holding a baby which is undated, but with a similar pretty border showing a little art-deco influence so maybe also from 1914ish?
