Ice Cream Cone High Heels Pinup Photoshoot | My Photography, Vintage Styling & Photography
I had such an incredible time shooting Dixie in her delightful vintage pink dress paired with her homemade ice cream cone high heels. Dixie Dupree, one of the most delightful pinup models based here in St. Louis, joined me in an unforgettable photoshoot to add some flair to her modeling portfolio. Her creative and quirky high heels—a visual play on vintage whimsy and fun—perfectly complemented the essence of pinup photography, which seamlessly blends cheeky glamour with playful nostalgia.
Pinup modeling itself has a fascinating history, tracing its roots to the 1940s and 1950s, when pinup girls became cultural icons. These posters and photos were initially created as morale boosters for soldiers during World War II, their flirty, yet classy aesthetic designed to strike the perfect balance between suggestiveness and innocence. Over the decades, the pinup aesthetic has been immortalized, continually inspiring contemporary artists, photographers, and models like Dixie who live and breathe this classic style.
For this photoshoot, the focus was on capturing the humor and imagination that defined mid-century pinup artwork. Dixie’s pink dress, a nod to softer post-war fashion sensibilities, emphasized structured feminine elegance mixed with a daring twist of fun thanks to her fabulous high heels. The homemade ice cream cone heels were quintessentially pinup—whimsical, eye-catching, and perfectly complemented by her radiant confidence.
My dear friend Sherrie, who owns Studio 281 Photography, also worked side-by-side with me during this session. It’s always so enriching to work with fellow photographers, especially when comparing and contrasting our creative approaches. Photographing the same model in the same moment yet through differing artistic lenses proves how unique and personal the art of photography is. In a sense, this collaborative spirit echoes another significant part of the vintage era: the post-war boom in community, art, and shared creativity.
We both leaned into the vibrant energy that pinup culture influences today, a reflection of its enduring impact on fashion, art, and photography. From its cheeky Bettie Page beginnings to modern-day reimaginings like ice cream cone heels, pinup remains timelessly relevant.
This photoshoot was not only a creative outlet but also a tribute to the enduring charm of vintage fashion and styling. When you think about it, the allure of pinup draws deeply from a time when style and self-expression flourished—even in the face of challenging global times. It gave women a voice and a confident image during an era when roles and expectations were shifting rapidly. There’s something deeply inspiring about revisiting this period, not just through vintage clothing but also by exploring the lighthearted creativity of that time.
What a fun modern pinup shoot this was! Thanks to Dixie, this session was a reminder of how keeping the past alive through fashion and photography can be so richly fulfilling and endlessly enjoyable. Through every shot, her personality—and those fabulous ice cream cone heels—truly shined. Sometimes, the boldest flourishes, like whimsical shoes, can evoke the most laughter, astonished glances, and smiles, both then and now.
Sharing nostalgic charm and vintage style like this means carrying forward the legacy of mid-century artistry in a way that feels fresh and new while deeply rooted in history.
