It’s always fascinating to step back in time and see how fashion of the past reflects cultural milestones and individual expression. In this particular shoot, I had the pleasure of working with Jaslene for a pinup-style session as part of the Carondelet Historical Society Project, where we explored vintage styling and photography with attention to historical detail. This session gave us a chance to showcase and experiment with iconic pieces from different eras, including a WWII WAC Uniform, a stunning 1960s feathered hat, and a traditional Vietnamese costume. These looks not only highlight different facets of history but also give a glimpse into how fashion evolved alongside major global and cultural shifts.

The WWII WAC Uniform: Women Supporting the War Effort

The highlight of this shoot was the WWII WAC Uniform (Women’s Army Corps), which Jaslene modeled beautifully. Established in 1942, the WAC played an important role in mobilizing over 150,000 women during World War II into non-combatant roles that freed up men for the frontlines. Women in the WAC worked as clerks, mechanics, and medical staff – and their tailored uniforms emphasized both practicality and professionalism while subtly promoting patriotism. The iconic design of the jacket, with its clean lines and structured shoulders, symbolized the shift of women from the domestic sphere to active contributors to national initiatives. Watching Jaslene embody the dignity and discipline of women during this time made it a very special set for me to photograph.

The 1960s Feathered Hat: A Symbol of the Decade’s Glam

Another standout moment from the shoot was Jaslene wearing an elegant feathered hat from the 1960s. The 1960s marked an era of fashion experimentation, driven by cultural upheavals, social movements, and a collective desire to break free from more conservative post-war aesthetics. Accessories like feathered hats became symbols of individuality and flamboyance, epitomizing the glamour of the time. This particular hat, which Jaslene modeled to perfection, had a modern yet timeless appeal. Her expressions truly brought it to life, especially since hats during this era often served as focal points in women’s outfits, making bold fashion statements on their own.

Traditional Vietnamese Costume: A Tribute to Culture

Adding a personal and cultural layer to the shoot, Jaslene also brought along a traditional Vietnamese costume – a nod to her own heritage. This was such a vibrant addition to the session, showcasing the beauty and elegance of traditional clothing and paying homage to how fashion intertwines with identity and culture. This inclusion highlighted the importance of honoring individual stories within broader historical narratives, as fashion often carries personal significance that transcends time and geography.

The Joy of Blending Fashion and History

This session was a fantastic blend of my passions for fashion photography and historical exploration. By styling vintage clothing and accessories like the 1960s feathered hat and documenting pieces rich with history like the WWII WAC Uniform, I was reminded of how much storytelling can happen through clothing. Each outfit has a story to share — about the women who wore them, the events that shaped them, and the societal values they represent.

For me, the 1960s hat stood out the most, not just because of its striking appearance, but because Jaslene’s natural expressions and playful energy completely brought it to life. It sparkled in a way that felt effortlessly modern while staying rooted in its vintage charm.

This project wasn’t just about taking photos; it was about capturing snapshots of history and breathing modern energy into them. When Jaslene modeled these pieces, it became more than a photoshoot — it became a celebration of historical fashion, individuality, and the beauty of diverse stories told across time.
