A Classic Cashmere Coat and Tailor’s Opportunity

This is one of those coats you can almost feel before you even put it on. A classic mid-century camel overcoat in 100% Pure Cashmere, it embodies the clean, structured look associated with 1950s–1960s menswear: quietly elegant, practical, and made to last. It still carries its original “loomed and tailored in the New England manner” label along with an Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) union tag—details that firmly place it in the era when American-made, union-crafted outerwear was a wardrobe staple for professionals, travelers, and city commuters.

The outer cashmere shell is still lovely: a warm camel color with a soft hand and a timeless three-button, notch-lapel silhouette. Classic flap pockets and button tab cuffs complete the mid-century look, the kind of design that would have layered easily over a suit on a cold downtown sidewalk. I had it professionally dry cleaned by a fabric care specialist, so it is fresh and ready for its next chapter, whether that’s careful restoration or immediate wear by someone who appreciates a coat with history and character.

However, the inner story is more dramatic and tells the tale of a garment that was truly worn and relied upon. The original satin lining has really seen life: there are multiple tears, worn and “shattered” areas, and quite a few visible hand-done mends at the seams and underarms—signs that a previous owner cared enough to keep it going rather than discard it. The lining at the back, hem, and sleeves is especially fragile. The pocket flaps show wear on the underside, but the pocket bags inside appear solid and usable, and the neckline and hanging loop area are in decent shape for the age, suggesting it was hung and stored carefully between seasons.

This coat is technically wearable as is if you do not mind a rough lining, and some vintage lovers cherish that “lived-in” authenticity. That said, I am primarily listing it as a restoration project or for someone who loves giving beautifully made garments a second life. It would be fantastic as a cutter piece, pattern reference, theater or film costume, or an upcycling project for a tailor or designer who wants to showcase true mid-century construction techniques while updating the interior. In the right hands, this can go from “survivor” to heirloom-quality showpiece.

Condition and Restoration Opportunity:

This coat is truly a survivor, and its condition reflects both its quality and its years of use. We recently had it professionally dry-cleaned by a fabric care specialist, so the work of freshening and surface cleaning has already been done for you. While the luxurious cashmere outer shell is in good condition with minor flaws, the original lining is in Poor condition. The photos clearly show extensive damage, tearing, and previous crude hand-mending around the armholes, pockets, and rear vent—evidence of decades of wear in the mid-century tradition of owning and maintaining a single “good” coat rather than constantly replacing it.

Crucially, this coat is wearable as is if you don’t mind the damaged lining, but it is an exceptional candidate for a professional re-lining project. The exterior shell still has that rich camel tone and soft nap associated with vintage cashmere, making it absolutely worth the investment. Replacing the lining with new satin or silk will restore this cashmere beauty to the kind of polished, fully-finished look it likely had when first purchased in the 1950s/60s. We have already handled the first step by having the coat professionally dry-cleaned by a fabric care specialist, so you or your tailor can focus on the structural and aesthetic work of rebuilding the interior.
