Here are more never-posted pinup and retro-styled photographs from my shoot a few years ago with St. Louis-based model, June Ann. This session highlights her stunning vintage-inspired wardrobe, which she styled herself, alongside her perfectly executed pinup makeup and hair. It’s truly amazing how June Ann brings a classic look to life with such authenticity and grace.
The session featured two beautifully preserved vintage cars: a sleek black Chevrolet Bel Air and a vibrant green Chevrolet. These cars are iconic examples of mid-20th-century American automotive design, which celebrated both aesthetic beauty and mechanical ingenuity. The Chevrolet Bel Air, introduced in the early 1950s, became a symbol of post-war prosperity and optimism. Its streamlined body, bold chrome accents, and luxurious interiors were designed to attract the upwardly mobile families of the era. By the time black-and-chrome Bel Airs like this one appeared on the road, they were epitomizing 1950s Americana.
Similarly, the green Chevrolet June Ann poses beside takes us back to an era when car manufacturers were experimenting with brighter, bolder palettes. Post World War II, consumer goods—including automobiles—embraced colorful designs as consumers sought vibrancy and cheerfulness in their lives after the austere wartime years. Bright green shades like this were not uncommon in the 1950s and 1960s as they mirrored trends in architecture, fashion, and graphic design.
As someone who loves vintage aesthetics but isn’t an expert on classic cars, I always admire the craftsmanship and attention to detail in automobiles like these. They weren’t just vehicles, but moving pieces of art, representing a fusion of engineering and design that has stood the test of time. June Ann truly brought out the spirit of these cars, with her retro clothing and vibe perfectly harmonizing with the cars’ iconic styling.
Against the muted tones of a grey spring day, the vivid colors of the scene made everything pop. The black and green tones of these two classic cars contrasted so beautifully with June Ann’s attire—each element of the shoot seemed to capture the spirit of old-fashioned glamour. Her pinup poses, which felt straight out of a 1940s or 1950s magazine, added a dynamic energy to the stillness of the vintage cars, creating a story that feels both nostalgic and timeless.
This shoot also reminds us just how rooted in history the pinup style is. During the wartime 1940s, pinup art and photography gained popularity as cheerful, aspirational imagery for soldiers overseas. Women like Bettie Page and Rita Hayworth became icons of pinup, influencing an entire generation of beauty ideals. Even as the decades passed and society moved beyond the war years, the allure of pinup fashion and photography endured, morphing into what we now recognize as a celebration of vintage glamour and femininity.
Though I may not have a knack for identifying vintage cars or nailing down their model years (all I can usually rely on is what I can see on the side of the car), I’d love to hear from enthusiasts who can share more insight into the history of these particular models. If you recognize the exact year or other details about these vintage Chevrolets, feel free to leave a comment!
Sometimes, it’s just good to take a moment, indulge in retro styling, and enjoy the aesthetic charm of a bygone era. This shoot is a fond reminder of how much beauty there is in things we might otherwise overlook—whether it’s the curve of a classic car, the bold lines of a pinup pose, or a colorful spring day that turns any backdrop into a perfect scene.
Have you ever worked with or admired vintage cars like these? Or do you share a love for the pinup aesthetic? Let me know your thoughts—your stories, insights, or even memories of classic car rides would be such a delight to hear! It’s always wonderful to learn how others connect to history through their own lives and experiences.
